April 26, 2010 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State freshman shortstop Erin Nesbit has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for her stellar efforts in a doubleheader sweep of Auburn on Wednesday.
Nesbit hit .600 (3-for-5) and tallied the game-winning home runs in both games as MSU swept the regular-season series from Auburn for the first time since 2001. The pair of wins improved State to 26-24 overall and 7-15 in SEC play.
"Erin is very deserving of this honor after hitting the game-winning home run in both games against Auburn," Mississippi State head coach Jay Miller said. "We are very proud of Erin for receiving this award. We hope Wednesday's two wins at Auburn are the beginning of a strong finish both for her and our ballclub."
In the opening game, the Acworth, Ga., native crossed the plate with two of MSU's three runs. In the fourth inning, she helped the Dawgs to a 2-1 lead as she hit a one-out double and scored on Jessie Spain's two-bagger.
After Auburn tied the game 2-2, Nesbit put Mississippi State ahead for good as she lined a pitch from Anna Thompson over the fence in left field.
In the second game of the twinbill, Nesbit made her only hit of the game a big one as she roped a solo shot to center field that broke a 1-1 tie as State went on to a 2-1 victory.
Nesbit brings a .225 average (27-for-120) into this weekend's three-game series against Florida at the MSU Softball Field. She has collected three doubles and ranks second on the team with six home runs, four triples and 19 walks.
Fans are asked to wear Maroon for Saturday's 1 p.m. doubleheader against the Gators. Saturday will also be Alumni Day at the MSU Softball Field, with former Bulldogs being recognized between games.
Sunday's series finale is set for a noon start and will be televised on SportSouth. MSU is encouraging fans to wear pink to the game as part of Mississippi State's StrikeOut Cancer game.
