MSU Softball Inks Alabama Pitcher Shana Sherrod

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State head softball coach Jay Miller has announced the signing of Vestavia Hills, Ala., standout pitcher Shana Sherrod to a national letter of intent.
Sherrod has enjoyed a stellar career for Jennifer Brown at Vestavia Hills High School, leading the Lady Rebels to three state tournament appearances and appearing in over half of the team's games since 2006. Sherrod, who was named Top Pitcher in the South and Hoover areas by the Birmingham News entering her senior campaign, eclipsed the 100-career win plateau this season while leading her team to the area championship.
"We are looking forward to Shana joining our program next fall," Miller said. "She has had a great prep career over in Alabama. Shana is a great drop ball pitcher, and we feel that she will compliment our pitching staff very well. We are looking forward to her having a great career here at Mississippi State."
In 2009 Sherrod compiled nine wins, a 0.94 ERA, a save and 126 strikeouts despite missing part of the season with an injury.
An Over The Mountain Journal All-Area selection each year of her career, she won 31 games as a sophomore while earning ASWA Class 6A All-State honors. Sherrod also claimed Alabama All-State Tournament accolades after guiding Vestavia Hills to a third-place finish.
Teaming with current Bulldogs Ali Bainbridge and Jessie Spain as a freshman in 2007, she went 27-4 with 178 strikeouts, eight shutouts and a 0.94 ERA as the Lady Rebels earned a fifth-place state finish and capped the campaign with a 64-5 record.
In her inaugural season of varsity action (2006), Sherrod won eight games while leading VHHS to area and regional championships and a runner-up finish at the state tournament.
The daughter of Blake and Cindy Sherrod, she has spent her summers playing for her father's Skyhawks Elite travel team. She teamed with MSU freshman outfielder Jessica Cooley to lead the Skyhawks to the ASA National Tournament. Last summer the team won the NSA championship and finished second in the Florida World Series.
In 2008, Sherrod helped pace the Skyhawks to a second-place state finish and a seventh-place showing at the prestigious Colorado Fireworks.
