Bulldogs Post Solid First Round At SEC Championship
April 16, 2010 | Men's Golf
"We had probably our best round of the year," said head coach Clay Homan. "This is a demanding course and we managed our way around it well."
The 282 is also the second lowest round all-time by a Bulldog squad at the SEC Championship and the second lowest round by the MSU linksters this season. MSU is tied with South Carolina for fourth among the 12-team field following first round action.
The Bulldogs are led by sophomore Lee Heaton, who is tied for fourth after a 1-under-par effort on the opening day. Heaton's 69 is a career-best first round outing by the Oxted, England-native. Heaton is also MSU's leader in pars made with 12.
State junior Evan Hugall tallied an even-par 70 in the first round, tying him for 14th. Hugall's 70 was a career-low single round. True freshman Brad Mason of MSU notched a 71, which is a career-best first round by the rookie. Mason is tied for 26th and leads MState in birdies made with four.
Bulldog true freshman Robi Calvesbert finished the opening day 2-over-par and is tied for 30th. Sophomore Brad Thompson rounded out State's lineup with a 10-over-par showing.
Arkansas leads the field with a 2-under-par 278, followed by Auburn and Florida which notched even-par rounds of 280.
"There is still a lot of golf left but it is nice to get off to a good start," said Homan.
The Bulldogs will carry their momentum into the second round tomorrow when they tee off at 7 a.m. CT. Live stats will be available at www.mstateathletics.com.
