March 04, 2010 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Mississippi State softball team closes the pre-SEC slate this weekend when it welcomes Mississippi Valley State, Troy and Wright State to the MSU Softball Field for the Bulldog Classic.
The tournament kicks off at 1 p.m. Friday, with the Bulldogs facing Troy at 3 p.m. Head coach Jay Miller's squad faces MVSU and Wright State at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively, on Saturday before closing the weekend with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday.
Admission to all games at the MSU Softball Field is free, and Bulldog Club members can have their Dog Tag scanned 30 minutes prior to first pitch through the first 15 minutes of each State game.
The Bulldogs have been outstanding in the tournament, compiling a 34-6 record. Under Miller's guidance, the Dawgs are a remarkable 21-1 in the event and 12-0 the past three seasons.
Miller's squad comes into the weekend 9-6 overall following Wednesday's 3-0 setback to seventh-ranked Michigan. Despite suffering their first home loss of the season, the Dawgs have won 14 of their last 17 games at the MSU Softball Field.
Senior Chelsea Bramlett seeks to continue that home success. The three-time all-American paced State with two hits Wednesday night to push her hit streak to 12 games, four shy of her career best.
The Cordova, Tenn., native leads MSU with a .490 average and 25 hits. She has also contributed a double and a triple while driving in four runs and scoring a team-high 14 times. The school's career steals leader, Bramlett is a perfect 13-for-13 on the bases this season and has swiped a school sixth-most 21-straight going back to the 2009 season.
Sophomore Ka'ili Smith extended her hit streak to six games against the Wolverines. A second team all-SEC selection last season, Smith is hitting .413 this season while leading the Dawgs with four home runs and 16 RBI.
Redshirt sophomore Misty Flesher's three wins pace a Bulldog pitching staff that has seen four players win multiple games this season. Flesher also leads MSU with 24 strikeouts, while freshman Stephanie Becker (2-1) tops the squad in ERA (1.31) and saves (2).
Troy, State's first opponent of the weekend, improved to 12-4 on the year after sweeping Middle Tennessee in its Sun Belt Conference opener this week.
The Trojans visit Starkville hitting .312 as a team, with Rocky Paige's .420 average leading the way. Page's two home runs are tied for tops on the squad with Courtney Cherry (.341) and Hayden Gann (.340). Cherry and Gann pace Troy with 14 RBI each. Ashlyn Williams has been solid in the circle for Troy this season, compiling a 9-3 record and a 1.45 ERA while striking out 130.
Wright State holds a 5-7 record on the year, but the Raiders come to Starkville having won three-straight games. WSU, which is making its second trip to Starkville in three seasons, is led in batting by China Frost's .395 average and Kristen Bradshaw's seven RBI. Sharon Palma's four wins lead a Wright State pitching staff that has been touched for a 5.18 ERA so far this season.
Mississippi Valley State joined the Bulldogs in last weekend's NFCA Leadoff Classic field. The Delta Devilettes finished the weekend 1-4 while falling to 4-9 on the season.
Ashley Hobbs' .346 average leads an MVSU squad that is hitting just .197 as a unit. Tiana Parks has driven in a team-high seven runs despite struggling to a .143 average so far this season. Brittany Franklin and Lisa Jansen pace Mississippi Valley State in the circle. Jansen has a pair of wins on the year, but has been hit for a 4.97 ERA. Franklin has posted a 2.62 ERA, giving up 17 runs in 24.0 innings en route to a 1-0 ledger.
