Bramlett Named Finalist for Lowe's Senior CLASS Award
March 29, 2010 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State senior catcher Chelsea Bramlett has been named one of 10 finalists for the prestigious Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, and Bulldog fans are encouraged to vote for her once daily at www.seniorCLASSaward.com or by texting S1 to 74567.
Fans can vote for Bramlett now through May 17 for the award that recognizes achievements in community, classroom, character and competition.
The Cordova, Tenn., native has enjoyed a stellar career at Mississippi State, becoming the first Bulldog to earn first-team all-America honors the first three years of her career. Bramlett is currently pacing the Southeastern Conference in hitting for the second-straight year with a .529 average (63-for-119) that also ranks in the top five nationally.
"Chelsea combines all the aspects of this award very well. She's a three-time all-American and a two-time academic all-American," Mississippi State head coach Jay Miller said. "She has set numerous records on the field, and she's a great student in the classroom. Chelsea works tirelessly in the community supporting our M-Club programs and our softball community service projects in addition to some things she does on her own.
"She's a member of the United States National Team and manages to balance that along with being a student and competing at the highest level here at Mississippi State," Miller said. "It's a great honor for her, our softball program and Mississippi State University to have one of the top-10 finalists for this award."
Currently the Dawgs' career batting average leader (.453), the top-25 finalist for USA Softball Player of the Year became the school's career hits record-holder on Saturday as she tallied her 324th hit to pass former Bulldog all-American Keri McCallum.
She has also scored a league-high 42 runs this season, giving her a school second-most 205 for her career. Bramlett has also stolen an SEC-best 43 bases this season, ranking her second nationally in stolen bases per game. Going back to last season, the Mississippi State single-season and career record holder has swiped an MSU-best 50-straight bases without being thrown out.
Last season she was named the adidas Golden Shoe Award recipient as Division I's top base-stealer after swiping a school-, SEC- and NCAA-best 54 bases. During that award-filled junior campaign that also included a second-straight Diamond Sports Division I Catcher of the Year award, she was tabbed to the United States National Team. Over the summer she helped lead the Red, White and Blue to gold medals at the Canada Cup, World Cup of Softball and Japan Cup against some of the top teams in the world.
One of State's team leaders, Bramlett has also enjoyed an award-filled career in the classroom. Mississippi State's female nominee for the SEC's prestigious Boyd-McWhorter Postgraduate Scholarship, Bramlett has been named Academic All-SEC each year of her career. Last season the teaching and coaching major earned ESPN The Magazine Second Team All-America honors after claiming first-team accolades in 2008. She has also been named NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete twice during her career.
Despite the full schedule that comes with competing in the SEC and carrying a full academic load, Bramlett still finds time to serve the campus and community. An active member of Mississippi State's M-Club student-athlete service organization, she has helped paint paw prints on campus roads, sign autographs and hand out candy at MSU's annual Halloween Carnival, as well as deliver bags of food to Starkville residents for Thanksgiving.
Bramlett also assisted with Starkville's annual Festival of the Trees, an event that raises money for the United Way. A mentor to young softball players through MSU's winter and summer camps, she also helped mail DVDs of State's home football games to soldiers stationed overseas.
