March 16, 2010 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Fresh off a cross-country trip to Fresno, Calif., the Mississippi State softball team returns to the road on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. first pitch against Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.
Wednesday's trek to south Mississippi continues a 13-game road swing for a Bulldogs squad that is 16-11 on the year following last weekend's five-game set at the Fresno State-hosted Bayer Cropscience Classic.
Three-time NFCA First Team All-American Chelsea Bramlett continues to pace Mississippi State at the plate. Bramlett raised her Southeastern Conference second-best batting average to .512 after hitting .563 (9-for-16) with five RBI and six runs scored during the West Coast swing.
Bramlett had a career-long 22-game hit streak snapped against Cal State Northridge on Sunday, but she kept her perfect stolen-base tally intact as she was 11-for-11. The Cordova, Tenn., native and USA National Team member leads the SEC with 33-straight stolen bases to open the year. Going back to the 2009 campaign, Bramlett has swiped a school-record 41 bases without being thrown out.
Sophomore Ka'ili Smith had another outstanding weekend at the plate, earning all-tournament honors after hitting .267 (7-for-15) with a triple, three home runs, 10 RBI and four runs scored. The Kapolei, Hawaii, native has tallied a .427 batting average this season while compiling five doubles, two triples, a team-high seven home runs and an SEC second-most 32 RBI. Smith tops the league with 65 total bases this season.
Misty Flesher and Kylie Vry pace the Bulldogs with six and five victories in the circle, respectively. Flesher has tossed a team-high 60.2 innings so far this season, while Vry has thrown 57.0 frames and tops the squad with 39 strikeouts.
The Bulldogs meet a Golden Eagles squad that fell to 12-5 this season after three losses to Houston last weekend. Jill Mathis leads USM in average with a .463 tally, while Megan Hill tops the squad in home runs (6) and RBI (16).
Gabby Luciani and Beth Dietrich have combined for a 7-2 record in the circle this season for Southern Miss. Luciani has tossed the majority of the innings (51.0), striking out 59 and allowing just eight earned runs (20 total) for a 1.10 ERA.
Following the midweek trip to Hattiesburg, State returns to Southeastern Conference play this weekend when it ventures to Oxford for a three-game set against Ole Miss.
