Sullivan Scores Sixth Goal of Season as Dawgs Fall to Kentucky
October 24, 2010 | Soccer
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Elisabeth Sullivan scored her team-best sixth goal of the season as the Mississippi State soccer team suffered a 5-1 setback to Kentucky Sunday afternoon at the UK Soccer Complex.
The Memphis, Tenn., native's goal, her sixth of the season, tied her with Heidi Ondra (2003) and Charleston Platt (1997) for the fifth-most goals by a Bulldog freshman. Her 16 points this season are also fifth in the MSU rookie record books, one back of Lauren Tietze (1996).
Kentucky (9-7-2, 3-5-2 SEC) went up 1-0 two minutes in when Natalie Horner slipped behind the Mississippi State (7-12-0, 0-10-0 SEC) defense and beat Skylar Rosson with her third goal of the season.
Rosson stopped five shots on the afternoon, giving her an MSU seventh-most 107 saves for the season.
State's Elisabeth Sullivan managed to net the equalizer with 25 minutes left in the opening half to continue her stellar freshman season.
Aubrey Curington won the ball in the air to Madison McKee. McKee in turn found Rachel Wannek, and she hit Sullivan in stride for the tying goal.
State missed an opportunity to take the lead in the 29th minute. McKee was fouled in the box on a corner kick, but her penalty kick opportunity was blocked away by Hiance.
The Wildcats regained the lead in the 38th minute as the Bulldogs were unable to clear a corner kick, and the ball bounced right to Laura Novikoff for a shot from point-blank range.
Novikoff put UK up 3-1 in the 53rd minute as she used a strong wind at her back and lined a 45-yard free kick into the top left corner of the net for her second goal of the afternoon.
The Wildcats extended the lead to 4-1 on a Kelsey Hunyadi free kick in the 64th minute, and Taylor Parker volleyed in a corner kick to complete the scoring.
The Bulldogs close the season Fri., Oct. 29 against Ole Miss at the MSU Soccer Field. First kick in the Magnolia Cup battle is set for 7 p.m.
