STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State finished the opening weekend of home Southeastern Conference action with a 3-0 setback to No. 18 Georgia Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.

MSU fell to 7-8 overall and 0-6 in league play, while Georgia improved to 8-2-4 and 3-0-3 in SEC action.

“I felt we took 10 steps forward as a team on Friday, but today we took 10 steps back,” Bulldog coach Neil Macdonald said. “Skylar Rosson was excellent in goal, but the rest of the defense didn't give her enough support. It's really disappointing to see us put in a performance like that after we played so well against Tennessee on Friday.”

Two days after matching a career high with 12 saves, Rosson stopped nine shots on Sunday to bring her season tally to 83.

Georgia out-shot the Bulldogs 26-6 in the match, with State collecting five of its attempts in the second half.

First-half goals from Alexa Newfield (3:09) and Jamie Pollock (34:27) proved to be the difference in the match.

State had a chance to get on the scoreboard in the 38th minute. Athens, Ga., native Abby Trevino received a long pass for a breakaway attempt, but her shot was turned back by Ashley Baker to give UGA the 2-0 advantage going into halftime.

MSU had another scoring opportunity in the 55th minute. Senior Leanna Baldner received a Jasmine Simmons corner kick in front of the goal, and after having her first attempt blocked, she retrieved the ball and directed a kick toward the goal that Baker snagged.

Georgia came back down the field and went up 3-0 when Laura Eddy put a volley past Rosson at the 57:36 mark.

Mississippi State continues a five-match homestand next weekend, challenging Arkansas at 7 p.m. Friday before LSU comes to campus for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Sunday.
