STARKVILLE, Miss. - All-SEC senior Jarvis Varnado recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds to help Mississippi State (16-5, 4-2 SEC) break its two-game skid with a 67-51 victory against the LSU Tigers (9-12, 0-7) at Humphrey Coliseum Saturday afternoon. The win slated MSU coack Rick Stansbury as the 20th SEC head coach to record 100 career wins.
Stansbury stands at 100-82 in SEC competition in the midst of his 12th season at the Bulldog helm. Under his tenure, MSU has averaged 21 wins per season, currently holds the SEC record with six divisional titles and more than doubled its all-time postseason appearances.
Varnado also swatted away four shots and now stands 35 blocks shy of the NCAA career record. In addition, he registered his 11th double-double of the season and 26th of his career.
Leading the team was Ravern Johnson, who scored 15 on 6-of-11 shooting. Senior Barry Stewart and junior Phil Turner each brought down 12 to round out State scorers in double-digits.
Senior Tasmin Mitchell paced the Tigers, notching 26 of the team's 51 points. While Mitchell hit 10 of his 24 shots, the remainder of the team managed just an 8-of-29 performance.
The Bulldogs never trailed in the contest, and held the Tigers without a field goal until the first half's 10:10 mark. MSU led 23-15 at halftime, the lowest first-half point total for LSU this season.
Despite three consecutive made treys midway through the second half by junior Bo Spencer, State lengthened its advantage throughout the rest of the game.
"It wasn't very much of an offensive game for either team," Stansbury said. "They intentionally controlled the pace of the game by holding the ball. We stayed in it because of our ability to defend. "
The Bulldogs have won six of its last eight outings versus the Tigers.
Mississippi State now embarks on another two-game road trip, starting with a contest against 21st-ranked Vanderbilt in Nashville on Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised on the SEC Network.
