
Mississippi State Opens 2010 Indoor Season With Stellar Performance In Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Mississippi State track and field teams open the indoor season at the Kentucky Invitational Saturday. Sophomore Chelsea Rae Smyth led the Lady Bulldogs with her fifth-place 800-meter run performance, while Bulldog sprinters D'Angelo Cherry and Tavaris Tate claimed the top honor in the 100-meter and 400-meter dashes.
A small group of MSU women's distance runners traveled to Lexington to open the 2010 season. Smyth led the way in the women's 800-meter run with a 2 minute, 12.97 seconds performance. In the mile run Chloe Phillips was the first Lady Bulldog to cross the line in 5:09.47, and Dominique Lockhart was not far behind finishing in 5:17.92. Freshman Adriana Poole was the top MSU finisher in the 3,000-meter run finishing in 10:49.04.
Also making the trip to Kentucky were the men's sprinters who had an outstanding day. D'Angelo Cherry began his sophomore season with a 6.65 seconds 60-meter dash win. Dwight Mullings (6.81 seconds) and Justin Christian (6.85 seconds) also finished in the top 10 in fifth- and tenth-place respectively.
Freshman Tavaris Tate kicked off his Bulldog career by winning the 400-meter dash in 46.49 seconds. Junior Emanuel Mayers ended the race in 48.52 seconds to earn ninth-place. The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Alex Richter, Mullings, Mayers and Tate ran 3:09.80.
Next up the MSU track and field teams is the LSU Invitational on Jan. 22.
