State falls to 17-20 overall and 2-13 in SEC play, while the Gators improve to 39-3, 18-1 in league action with the series sweep.
A three-run second inning off freshman Lindsey Dunlap proved to be all UF would need. Dunlap fell to 9-12 on the year as she allowed the three runs on five hits in the complete-game effort.
The Bulldogs put the leadoff runner on base three times but could never break through against Florida starter Stacey Nelson, who picked up her third win of the weekend to improve to 23-3 overall. Nelson went the distance and surrendered three hits while striking out seven.
State's best scoring chance came in the first inning. Junior Chelsea Bramlett led off with an infield base hit and stole second, but Nelson got a pair of strikeouts and an infield pop-out to end the inning.
“Take away one inning where they scored three runs with two outs, and it's a different game. They scored runs with two outs all weekend, which is the sign of a really good team,” MState head coach Jay Miller said. “Other than that one inning, Lindsey pitched really well for us.
“We have to generate some offense. We had some chances with the lead-off runner on and couldn't score them. Stacey Nelson did a nice job of getting out of those innings,” Miller said. “Hopefully we can bounce back this week. We have a lot of games left, and we have the chance to make some noise down the stretch.”
Bramlett collected her first hit of the weekend after having a 10-game hit streak snapped on Saturday. Freshman Ka'ili Smith and sophomore Ali Bainbridge each capped solid weekends with a hit each.
In the decisive second inning, Corrie Brooks put the Gators up 1-0 with her seventh home run of the season. Michelle Moultrie pushed the lead to its final margin as she hit a two-out triple down the right-field line that brought home Megan Bush who walked, and Kristina Hilberth who reached on a blooping single to left.
The Bulldogs return home from the eight-game road trip for a pair of mid-week contests. State will host South Alabama at 5 p.m. on Wednesday before closing the week with a twin bill against
