HONOLULU, Hawaii ? Chelsea Bramlett went 5-for-9 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored, and sophomore Courtney Nesbit homered and drove in a career-best four runs as the 25th-ranked Mississippi State softball team split the opening day of action at the Pepsi Malihini Aloha Tournament on the University of Hawaii campus in Honolulu.

“We didn't play well today, but we did a nice job of coming back in the second game after dropping the opener,” MState head coach Jay Miller said. “Elizabeth (Woolven) threw well in both games for us, but we have to do a better job of keeping the ball in the park. Hopefully we can come back tomorrow and play the way we are capable of playing.”
Woolven preserved the win in the nightcap for her first save of the season. Senior Kelsey Nurnberg moved to 7-0 on the year as she picked up the victory over the Broncos.

The Dogs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first as Bainbridge doubled home Bramlett and Allie Heon.
MState pushed the lead to 5-0 with three more runs in the third. Bainbridge kicked off the three-run burst with a two-out double, her second of the game. She scored as freshman Courtney Moore reached on one of SCU's six errors in the game. Nesbit added the other two runs as she blasted a towering home run over the wall in left field.

In the day's opening game, the Eagles jumped out to a 2-0, first-inning lead on a Jessica Paez two-run home run, but the Bulldogs cut into the lead with a run in the home half of the frame. Bramlett, who went 3-for-4 in the contest, beat out a bunt single to lead off the inning. After stealing second and third, she scored two batters later on a Jessie Bailey ground ball that was misplayed by the FGCU second baseman.
State took its first lead of the game with two outs in the second. Smith got the rally started with her first of two doubles in the game. After Brittany Gates reached on a bunt that was misplayed by the third baseman, Bramlett slapped a bouncer up the middle that cleared the bases and put State on top.

Jenks pushed the lead to 8-3 in the fifth as she capped her two-hit, two-RBI afternoon with a two-run home run. Dana Frantz earned the win for the Eagles. She moved to 6-1 as she surrendered three runs, one earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts in the complete-game effort.
