
Harris In Fourth After First Day Of Heptathlon At NCAA Championships; May Is All-America

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Mississippi State junior Marrissa Harris opened competition at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday afternoon. The Memphis, Tenn.,-native scored 3,482 points and sits in fourth heading into tomorrow's final day at the event. The meet is being held at Drake Stadium on the Drake University campus in Des Moines.
"Marrissa did great today," said MSU head coach Al Schmidt. "She has to have a big long jump tomorrow. Kendall (May) is an all-American. O'Neal (Wilder) did about as good as he could. He's just a young guy that got tired."
Harris took second in her heat and overall in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 13.52 seconds. She then tied for second in her flight with a high jump of 5 feet, 5 and one quarter inch. In the day's final two events, Harris set a season and personal-best with a throw of 39-04 ? in the shot put and ran 24.13 in the 200-meter dash. She begins the final day of the competition and meet in fourth place and the top SEC competitor in the event.
Kendall May earned his first all-America honor after running 10.44 seconds to finish eighth in the men's 100-meter dash finals.
Freshman O'Neal Wilder ended his sensational season after failing to advance to the men's 400-meter finals. Wilder finished 11th in the semifinals with a time of 46.35.
Harris begins action tomorrow at 11 a.m. A portion of the event's final day will air on CBS from 3-5 p.m. CST.
