2008 Bulldog Classic Softball Tournament - Recaps
AUSTIN PEAY 8, LOUISIANA TECH 6
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Austin Peay built an early six-run lead and held on for an 8-6 victory over Louisiana Tech in the opening game of the 2008 Bulldog Classic at the MSU Softball Field. The four-game opening day is scheduled to resume with a noon start between Austin Peay and Charleston Southern.
In the opener, the Lady Govs (2-4) took advantage of three first-inning errors by Tech to score three unearned runs. The lead grew to 5-0 an inning later on a two-run home run by Ashley Taylor. An RBI single by Tiffany Smith extended the lead to 6-0.
The Lady Techsters (11-11) battled back with two runs in the fourth inning and later scored three more times in the sixth inning. Tech scored again in the seventh inning but had a runner thrown out at second base to end that threat.
Tiffany Smith and Daniella Hooper each had two hits to pace Austin Peay's eight-hit attack. Amberly Waits and Kylie Bassett each had two hits to highlight Tech's 10 hit-attack.
Lacey Briscoe (1-0) pitched the first five innings to earn the win. Tech starter Mandi Bertsch took the loss.
CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 4, AUSTIN PEAY 3
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Back-to-back RBI doubles by Ashley Conway and Megan Hall lifted Charleston Southern past Austin Peay 4-3 in an eight-inning game at the 2008 MSU Bulldog Classic.
This contest was the second of four opening-round games at the MSU Softball Field. The homestanding Mississippi State Bulldogs are slated to take on Charleston Southern in the day's third game - an approximate 3 p.m. start.
Austin Peay (2-5) had actually grabbed a 3-2 lead in the top half of the eighth inning. A fielding error allowed leadoff runner Janea McCoy to score. The Lady Bucs (9-13) quickly erased that deficit with the back to back doubles to quickly end the contest.
The Lady Govs finished with 10 hits. Ashley Alverson had three hits including an RBI single. Tiffany Smith added two hits, including an RBI single. Jennifer Brooks drove in a pair of runs to highlight Charleston Southern's five-hit attack. No Lady Buc player had multiple hits.
Both pitchers went the distance.
Jamie Wellons (6-6) earned the win, while Ashley Elrod (1-3) took the loss.

LOUISIANA TECH 8, CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 2

Amber Waits hit a two-run home run and Louisiana Tech broke open a tight game with a three-run fourth inning as the Lady Techsters defeated Charleston Southern 8-2 Saturday at the Bulldog Classic on the Mississippi State campus. Louisiana Tech improved to 12-11 on the season, while Charleston Southern fell to 9-15.
Pitcher Krissi Oliver moved to 4-3 on the season as she allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts in the complete-game effort. She also helped her own cause at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three RBI.
Jamie Wellons fell to 6-6 with the loss. She gave up seven runs, five earned, on 11 hits in three and a third innings. Sondra Vetter pitched the final three and two-thirds, giving up an unearned run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts.
After scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, Danielle Sheridan led off with a single to right field before Waits blasted a two-run shot over the wall in right field to expand the lead to 4-1.
Amy Trendkamp paced the Lady Bucs at the plate, collecting two hits and driving in both CSU runs.

CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 9, AUSTIN PEAY 2
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Charleston Southern parlayed a pair of four-run innings into victory Sunday. The Lady Bucs erased an early deficit and cruised to a 9-2 victory at the MSU Softball Field. The Charleston Southern victory kicked off a three-game final round at the tournament. At noon, Charleston Southern was scheduled to play Louisiana Tech. At 2 p.m., Tech squares off with Mississippi State.
Charleston Southern improved to 10-15 with the victory, while Austin Peay fell to 2-7. An RBI single by Gail Matsushima and two-run double by Tatjana Slawson were the big blows in a four-run third , helping to open up a 5-1 lead.
Charleston Southern put the game away with four more runs in the sixth inning. Jill Shondell and Megan Hall had run-producing hits in that at-bat. Lisa Rice, Shondell, Hall, Matsushima and Slawson each had multiple hits for Charleston Southern. Slawson had a team-high three RBI. The Lady Bucs finished with 14 hits.
TIffany Smith, Daniella Hooper and Detra Farley had multiple hits for the Lady Govs. Austin Peay finished with nine hits.
LOUISIANA TECH 7, CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 1
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Krissi Oliver's three-run home run sparked a four-run second inning as Louisiana Tech powered to a 7-1 win over Charleston Southern at the Bulldog Classic Sunday afternoon.
Oliver blasted her second home run of the tournament over the wall in left center to put the Lady Techsters (14-11) on top 3-0. They added another run Heather Doiron reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and moved to third on an infield hit. She scored the inning's final run on Emma Barnes' stolen base when the throw skipped away from the second baseman.
Kylie Bassett went 2-for-2 at the plate and scored twice. Louisiana Tech added another in the bottom of the third and two more in the sixth. Mandi Bertsch moved to 5-3 as she allowed a run on four hits in four and a third innings. Meghan Krieg pitched the final two and two-thirds, giving up a hit and striking out four.
Jamie Wellons fell to 6-7 as she allowed the seven runs, four earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts in the complete-game effort.
