Varnado, the reigning National Defensive Player of the Year, recorded 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor to go along with his game-high 12 . He also blocking eight shots after leading the nation in blocked shots a year ago with 157. Sophomore Ravern Johnson led all scorers on the night with an 8-of-14 performance from the field for a total of 19 points, while freshman Romero Osby pitched in the team's second double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Dee Bost scored 13 points and handed out 7 assists to just 3 turnovers in the win.
Junior guards Marcus Lancaster and Freddy Little led Montevallo in scoring with 10 points apiece on a collective 8-of-25 shooting performance, while junior forward Nate Flowers led the squad in rebounding with nine boards.
Ranking second nationally in team field goal percentage defense, the Bulldogs followed suit by holding Montevallo to just 23-of-71 shooting from the floor for a 32.6% mark. Also specializing in blocks as a team by ranking second nationally in that category a year ago, MSU swatted 13 shots on the evening.
