May 09, 2007 | Softball
Junior Courtney Bures was named First Team All-SEC for the second time, while fellow junior Hayle Guess and Bramlett earned Second Team honors. Bramlett and Jessie Bailey became the first pair of freshmen to be named to the All-Freshman Team.
Bures returns to the First Team after earning honors in 2005. The junior is second in the conference with 56 runs batter in, and third with 13 hit by pitches, a new MSU single-season record. She is also tied for fifth in doubles (13) and tenth in hits (63) and on-base percentage (.458). However, in conference play, Bures has really shined. In SEC games, she is second in RBI (26) and third in runs (21) and total bases (52). She is also fifth in hitting (.381), on-base percentage (.480), hits (32) and doubles (6), seventh in slugging percentage (.619) and eighth in home runs (4).
Junior Hayle Guess earned Second Team All-SEC after being named to the inaugural All-Freshman Team in 2004. The Moss Point, Miss.-native finished the season hitting .326 against conference foes. Guess leads the conference in triples with four. She also is fifth in runs (20) and sixth in stolen bases (11).
Bramlett earned Second Team honors, as well as All-Freshman laurels, and became just the second Bulldog to be name SEC Freshman of the Year (Courtney Bures, 2005). The two-time SEC Freshman of the Week turned in one of the best rookie performances at State. The Cordova, Tenn.-native started all 28 conference games and finished SEC play hitting .326. Bramlett was second in conference play with 22 runs scored, as well as 19 stolen bases. She was also tied for eighth in hits with 31. Her 46 stolen bases overall set a new MSU record, and she stole 38 consecutive bases from February 16 to April 4, the second longest streak ever at Mississippi State.
Bailey played and started all 28 games for MSU. The Lithonia, Ga.-native finished SEC competition with 20 hits, 15 RBI and three runs scored. Her eighth inning grand slam capped off a come-from-behind victory in Game Two at Georgia.
Fifth-seeded Mississippi State (34-24) will take on fourth-seed and 19th-ranked Florida (44-19) in the first round action of the 2007 SEC Tournament on Thursday evening at 5 p.m. (CT) at Jane B. Moore Field on the campus of Auburn University.
