Late Goal Stuns State As Bulldogs Fall 1-0 To Auburn
October 07, 2007 | Soccer
STARKVILLE, Miss. ? Caitlin King's goal with 4:23 remaining broke a scoreless tie and gave Auburn (7-3-1, 3-1-0) a 1-0 victory over Mississippi State (5-7-0, 1-3-0) in a game that was a defensive battle throughout. It was the sixth consecutive shutout in the series for the Tigers.
After an MSU turnover, Auburn picked the ball up at midfield and dribbled into the offensive zone. Jenni Prescott picked up the ball, and passed it over to King who sent a shot from 25 yards away that sailed over MSU goalkeeper Taryn Holland's head for the only goal of the game.
The teams began the game with a very defensive match-up, as neither team got much going. However, play started to pick up with 15 minutes remaining in the first half. MSU got the first scoring chance of the game. Ashley Hood dribbled the ball up the middle, and passed off to Treena Ferguson. Ferguson dropped it back to Hood, who fired a shot towards the right corner. But, Auburn goalkeeper Ashley Whitworth made the diving save.
Four minutes later, Auburn had a chance to take the lead. Stephanie Fransoso dribbled into the box, and tried to put the ball over Holland.
But the sophomore made a leaping save. Addison Ragsdale immediately pounced on the ball, but sent it just over the crossbar, and teams went into halftime scoreless.
The Bulldogs got a scoring opportunity 17 minutes into the second half.
Jessica Davis intercepted a pass in the Auburn zone, and set up Katelyn Graben. The sophomore one-timed a shot, but Whitworth made the save.
Mississippi State continues its home stand this Friday. MSU will host No. 20 South Carolina on Friday, October 12, at 7 p.m. (CT), before facing Florida on Sunday, October 7, at 12 p.m. (CT).
