NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? The Mississippi State women's soccer team (6-11-1, 2-7-1 Southeastern Conference) got on the board early, but the homestanding Vanderbilt Commodores (6-8-3, 3-4-2 SEC) rallied to take a 3-2 double overtime victory on Sunday afternoon at the VU Soccer Complex.
The Bulldog offense played strong early. State's first chance to score came as Katelyn Graben crossed the ball to Jessica Davis, but VU goalkeeper Rachel Bachtel came up with the save on the attempt. Graben's persistence pushed up the ball once again with a cross to Treena Ferguson who found the left pocket to score for the Bulldogs in the eighth minute of play.
The Commodores returned the intensity pushing the ball up the field only to find MSU goalie Taryn Holland set to deny their efforts. White jerseys rushed the box several times to find no scoring opportunities due to the Bulldog defense.
However, Vanderbilt continued to push and found an opportunity as Amy Wilcox crossed the ball to find Amy Baumann unguarded who found the upper right of the net. The score motivated the Commodore's offense to own ball possession as they tried to break the maroon back line.
Late in the period, the battle for possession swapped back and forth as both teams struggled to find a scoring opportunity. Neither team could find the outlet they needed to rise above one another ending the first half with a 1-1 tie.
Davis started the second half with a straight undefended charge up the middle of the field to find Graben waiting for the pass that found the upper center of the net raising the score 2-1 at 52:09.
The Commodore offense responded pushing to the goal. Vanderbilt got the break they needed when a Mississippi State foul inside the box resulted in a penalty kick by Baumann. Holland came up with the save to stave off the scoring attempt.
The game remained physical as both teams pushed one another to find an open goal. The Bulldogs found themselves once again with a foul right outside the box. Mary Rachel Reynolds' free kick found the left pole and reflected into the upper right corner tying the game 2-2 at the 65:38 mark.
Both teams held each other at bay in the half's final minutes to force the extra period.
Neither team was able to score during the opening overtime session, but with 106:02 on the clock in the second extra period, Baumann found the right corner of the net on a pass from Taylour Claxton for the gamewinning goal.
Holland tallied a career-high 12 saves on 40 Vanderbilt shot attempts. State had 15 shots on the day.
The Bulldogs return to action Friday evening, in the regular season closer. MState faces archrival Mississippi in a 7 p.m. bout from the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium in Oxford.
