October 14, 2007 | Soccer
STARKVILLE, Miss. ? Mississippi State (5-8-1, 1-4-1 SEC) battled hard throughout the match, but in the end, Florida (7-4-2, 3-2-0 SEC) was just too much, as the Bulldogs fell, 5-0, Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.
MSU had a scoring chance minutes later. After a Florida foul, Hannah Tyler took the ensuing free kick and sent it toward the net. Jessica Davis leapt to head the ball, sending it just over the crossbar.
Florida grabbed the 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute. Meghan Kerns dribbled into the middle of field before passing it to Shana Hudson in the box. Hudson turned and fired a shot into the back of the net, giving UF the early lead.
State almost tied it with nine minutes remaining in the first half. Mary Claire Scurria played cross from 40 yards out. UF goalkeeper Meghan Berlingo outplayed the ball, and it headed toward the net. But, Shelley Lyle kicked it out just before it crossed the goal line.
The Gators made it 2-0 in the 40th minute. Caitlin Howard dribbled up the right side of the field, and sent a cross to the front of the net. Stacy Bishop tapped the ball over to Ashley Harris, who put the ball into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season.
Just four minutes later, the Gators added on to their lead. After the teams battled in State's zone, Liz Ruberry ended up with the ball, and blasted a shot from 25 yards out past MSU goalkeeper Taryn Holland to take a 3-0 lead.
UF picked up where they left off in the second half. Seconds after Bianca Gibbs hit the post, she headed in a cross from Shana Hudson just inside the left post for a 4-0 Florida lead.
State picked up its play midway through the second half. Treena Ferguson had three scoring chances in a five-minute span. However, the senior could not get the ball past Berlingo, who recorded her second shutout of the season.
Mississippi State heads to the road next weekend. They face No. 20 Georgia Friday night at 6 p.m. (CT) before heading to Knoxville to face the 14th-ranked Lady Vols on Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT).
