MSU's Late-Inning Heroics Down Ole Miss 5-2 At M&F Bank Fastpitch Classic
January 01, 1970 | Softball
MADISON, Miss. - Mississippi State (21-15, 4-7) scored three times in the seventh to break a 2-2 tie and defeat Ole Miss, 5-2, in the fifth annual M&F Bank Fastpitch Classic. It is State's first win at the Classic since 2004.
With one out, Sammie Jo Bailey singled, and Katie Johnson walked. After Michelle Kinney advanced the runners, Chelsea Bramlett gave MSU the lead, singling to left field and scoring two. Bramlett moved to third on a wild pitch, and came home on Nakita Boyce's single, giving Mississippi State the advantage lead.
We hung in there, said MSU head coach Jay Miller. We struggled at the plate early. But we finally adjusted a little bit. We got a lot of production from the top of the order, which we haven't gotten lately. Both Chelsea (Bramlett) and Nakita (Boyce) got back on track, and really won the ballgame for us tonight.
State broke a scoreless tie in the third. Johnson led off with a first pitch single, and advanced to second on Alise Doubt's error. Kinney then attempted to sacrifice Johnson to third, but Lauren Grill fielded the bunt and threw Johnson out at third. After Kinney stole second and advanced to third on Bramlett's ground out, Boyce doubled to left center, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
Ole Miss tied the game in the bottom half. Lauren Rowe singled to left and Doubt reached on at fielder's choice. After Doubt went to second on a wild pitch, Emily Sarver singled, putting runners at the corners with one out and knocking Stephanie Comeaux out of the game. Mary Jane Callahan then hit Kelli Miller's 2-2 offering to right, knocking in Doubt with the tying run. However, Grill and Lisa Conchos grounded out, stranding runners at second and third.
The Rebels took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Ashley Dowdy led off the inning with a triple down the right field line and scored on Amber Tramp's sacrifice fly.
MState tied the game at two in the sixth. Chelsea Bramlett led off with a double. Nakita Boyce then grounded to the pitcher, but Becky Nye threw the ball away, allowing Bramlett to come home and Boyce to reach second. Hayle Guess grounded to Grill, who threw to Dowdy covering third to get Boyce. Courtney Bures then fouled out to left field, and Katie Cooley grounded to the pitcher to end the inning.
Bramlett led Mississippi State, going 2-4 with two runs and two RBI, and Boyce was 2-3 with two RBI. Sara Hickerson went the final three innings, improving to 3-4 on the year.
State returns to conference play this weekend when they host South Carolina in a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday as part of Super Bulldog Weekend. Both days begin at 1 p.m. (CT). Fans can follow all the action live on www.mstateathletics.com. The game can also be heard on MSU's radio station, WMSV 91.1 FM and can be heard live on the station's website, www.wmsv.msstate.edu.
