STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Mississippi State Bulldogs notched a convincing88-61 victory over Auburn University Montgomery Wednesday night at Humphrey Coliseum in their exhibition debut of the 2006-07 basketball season.
Powered by a decisive 64-32 rebounding advantage and limiting the visiting Senators to only 25-percent field-goal shooting on the evening, the Bulldogs claimed their eighth consecutive exhibition victory and are now 14-2 in preseason contests under Stansbury's direction.
Preseason second-team all-SEC standout Charles Rhodes led all scorers for the game with 24 points on 7-of-9 field goals and 10-of-15 free throws.Fellow preseason all-conference performer Jamont Gordon added 16 points and nine rebounds for the winners, while freshman guard Ben Hansbrough contributed 15 points, including 10-of-10 from the line, off the Bulldog bench.
NAIA member AUM was led by reigning honorable mention all-American Joseph Manuel, who tallied 22 points but was held to 7-of-21 field-goal shooting on the night. He also paced the Senators on the boards with seven caroms.
Mississippi State will conclude its preseason slate by welcoming reigning NAIA runner-up Oklahoma City Saturday in a 6 p.m. contest at Humphrey Coliseum. There will be no charge for admission into Saturday's exhibition contest.
