W.O. Spencer was a part of the Cross Country and Track & Field team from 1920 to 1924 and was named Captain of Cross Country in 1921 and Track in 1922. Mile Champion of the 1921 and 1922 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships.
Spencer competed in the 1924 and 1928 Olympic Games. Winning the bronze medal in the 3000m Steeplechase at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam, Netherlands. 1928 AAU Champion in the steeplechase, where his 9:35.8 performance would serve as the American record.
Head Coach of the Mississippi State Track and Field team from 1937 to 1942, along with 1947.
Dedicated at Mississippi State as the namesake of the W.O. Spencer Track Stadium.
