Robert C. “Bobby” Brien made his mark at Mississippi State as one of the greatest tennis players in school history.
Hailing from Sydney, Australia, Brien won the Australia Junior Doubles and was ranked the No. 2 junior player in Australia before arriving in Starkville.
Brien excelled on the tennis court at MSU from 1964-67. He won the SEC singles title at the No. 4 position all four years, the SEC doubles title in 1965 and was named All-American in 1966 and 1967. He compiled an overall record of 67-1 in the Maroon and White.
He continued to win on the court following his college career. He won the South Carolina Men’s State Title in 1970, the Virginia State Title in 1975, and the Mississippi Men’s 35, 45 and 55 State Title in 1980.
He was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1985 and included in the Top 130 Best Performances of Australian Players in the 20th Century.
