Mike Proffitt was a four-year letterman on the mound for the Diamond Dawgs from 1969-1972 and was an integral part of leading the Bulldogs to their first College World Series in 1971.

Over his four seasons in the Maroon and White, Proffitt compiled a 30-10 record with a career ERA of 1.86, which is the fifth-best career ERA in program history. His 30 wins are third most in program history. He pitched over 300 innings, collected 265 strikeouts and threw 36 complete games, including a 15-inning game against Alabama during his freshman season. Proffitt also tossed 11 career shutouts.

Proffit’s sophomore and senior season ERAs of 1.19 and 1.41 both rank inside the top 10 of the best single-season ERAs in program history.

Proffit was named First Team All-SEC in 1971 and First Team ABCA All-Region in 1972. He was also named to the All-SEC Western Division team his senior season.

Proffitt was selected in the 15th round of the 1972 MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.

Proffitt passed away on February 25, 2014.
