Kermit Davis Sr.

Kermit Davis Sr. was the first recruit signed at State by legendary coach Babe McCarthy. His teams amassed a combined 61-14 record and a trio of AP top 15 finishes.
Davis was a team captain on State’s first SEC regular season championship squad that finished with a 24-1 record and No. 3 AP final ranking during his senior season in 1958-59.
Davis returned to State as an assistant coach for four seasons before he was promoted to head coach in 1970-71. He finished his career third in wins (91), captured the 1970-71 SEC Coach of the Year award from the AP and coached four NBA Draft picks headed by Rickey Brown and Wiley Peck who were chosen in the first round.
Davis, a native of Walnut, Mississippi, also was inducted into the state of Mississippi’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2022.
