John Allen Ellard was an integral part of the emergence of Mississippi State football, playing for the then Mississippi A&M Aggies from 1910-12 and 1914. Ellard was a tackle and captained the 1912 Aggies. He was named to the All-Southern teams in 1911 and 1912 He was part of the first international athletic event in school history when the Aggies won a 13-0 victory over Havana Athletic Club in Cuba.
In 1913, Ellard served as a student coach after suffering a broken leg that kept him from playing. The Aggies went 6-1-1 that season .

Over the four seasons of his playing career, Ellard and the Aggies compiled a 24-9-1 record, not including the 1913 season.
