Jeff Malone was one of the most electrifying players to wear the Maroon and White as a two-time Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention pick and a three-time All-SEC selection. He joined Bailey Howell as the program’s second player to capture multiple AP All-America honors.
Malone wrapped up his career as the program’s all-time leading scorer with 2,142 points from 1979-80 to 1982-83 over 110 games before the inception of the three-point line. He racked up a program single-season mark of 777 points while his 26.8 per game ranked second nationally as a senior.
Malone, the 1982-83 SEC Player of the Year by UPI, racked up a career-high was 39 points against Alabama on Jan. 31, 1983. He broke the school’s scoring record at Alabama on Feb. 26, 1983 and tallied 11 of his school-best 12 outings of 30-plus points as a senior captain.
Malone finished his State career with top 5 marks in field goals made (906 – 1st), free throws made (330 – 4th), free throw percentage (80.9 – tied 4th) and field goal percentage (51.2 – 5th).
Following State, Malone was selected No. 10 overall by the Washington Bullets in the 1983 NBA Draft. He was joined by teammates Terry Lewis and Kalpatrick Wells which marked the first time that State had three players chosen in the same draft.
Malone was a two-time NBA All-Star in 1986 and 1987 after he garnered NBA All-Rookie First-Team status in 1983-84. He scored 17,231 points and averaged over 20 points six times during his 13-year NBA career with the Bullets, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers and Utah Jazz.
Malone secured another 956 points over 51 games and eight NBA playoff trips with the Bullets and Jazz. He finished his career ranked inside the top 10 on the scoring list for both franchises.
Malone, a Macon, Georgia native, also was inducted into the state of Mississippi’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.
