J.T. “Blondy” Black was a part of the football and track & field teams in his time at Mississippi State. He lettered in the two sports from 1939-42 and went on to play football professionally in 1946.Â

While at MSU, black ran a school-record 100 in 9.6, which translated to both his football and track careers. He won the SEC Individual Championship in 1942 for the 100-yard dash. He was an offensive back in football, where he had both speed and power. Â

Blondy averaged 6.1 yards per carry during his varsity tenure and holds records for the highest yards-per-rush average in a single game and season. He ran a 97-yard play from scrimmage and a 95-yard kickoff return in 1942. He also earned Second Team All-SEC honors in 41-42. Â

He went on to play professionally for the Buffalo Bisons in 1946 before being traded to the Baltimore Colts to finish his career in 1947.Â
