Ogunkoya took the SEC title in the 400m in 1989 and 1990. To this day, she holds five Mississippi State program records in the sprints.
Ogunkoya is one of two three-time Olympians in school history and the only Bulldog to win multiple medals in one game. Representing Team Nigeria, she won bronze in the 400m at the 1996 Atlanta Games, becoming the first Nigerian to win an individual Olympic medal. She also won silver as the anchor leg of the 4x400m relay. Ogunkoya made her Olympic debut at the 1998 Seoul games in the 200m and 4x400m and competed in her final games at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, reaching the 400m and running on the 4x400m.
