Doug Hutton was a three-sport standout in basketball, baseball and track from 1960-61 to 1963-64.
On the hardwood, Hutton scored 907 points as the Bulldogs secured consecutive SEC championships in 1961-62 and 1962-63 fueled by a combined 47-7 record, the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1962-63 and a pair of Associated Press Top 10 finishes under coach Babe McCarthy.
Hutton was a team captain and captured All-SEC Third-Team honors during his senior season after he averaged a team-leading 14.9 points per game in 1963-64. He finished his career with double figures on 49 occasions.
Following basketball, Hutton moved to the baseball diamond for coach Paul Gregory. He was 5-0 with a 2.15 ERA over 50 innings of work in 1963 and won his first three decisions of 1964 before he injured his arm.
Hutton was a two-time SEC track champion on State’s 4x110 relay team in 1962 and 1963 coached by Jerry Simmons.
After his playing career, Hutton coached the State freshmen basketball team with teammate Joe Dan Gold in 1964-65. Then, he coached high school athletes for over 30 years at Hazlehurst, Florence and Clinton.
