Chuck Evans made an impact on both sides of the floor during his two seasons playing for Richard Williams after he transferred to State from Old Dominion. He secured All-SEC selections from the AP in 1991-92 and 1992-93 in addition to UPI All-America Honorable Mention status as a senior.
Evans was the SEC assists champion during both of his seasons in Maroon and White and wrapped up his career with 454 assists which was second in program history. He set a program single game record with 16 assists at Missouri-Kansas City on Feb. 23, 1993.
Evans compiled the program’s two highest season assist totals as he distributed at least five dimes in 50 of 57 games. He became the first State player to average at least 10.0 points and 5.0 assists per game for his career.
On the defensive end, Evans racked up 165 steals which also enabled him to finish in second place. Like assists, he was a two-time SEC steals champion and amassed the program’s two highest season steals mark.
Following State, Evans played professionally in England, France, Poland, Russia and Spain. He also coached professionally in England and Germany. His son, Phil Evans, was a basketball student manager at State for four seasons under Ben Howland followed by a volunteer assistant coach with State’s volleyball program in 2020 for Julie Darty-Dennis.
