Thurman "Bobby" Collins played football for the Bulldogs from 1951 to 1954, lettering all four years. He was even named co-captain for the 1954 season, where they defeated LSU and Alabama.

In his time at MSU, Collins led the team in punting every year he played. He was also the backup signal caller for the Bulldogs his first three years. In 1954, when he was named co-captain, he also became the team's starting quarterback. In his career, Mississippi State held a 20-15-3 record.

After graduating, Collins returned to his alma mater as a graduate assistant coach and later became the coach of the freshman squad, then moved to offensive backfield coach, a position he held through the 1959 and 1960 seasons. After spending some time as an assistant coach at various schools, Collins received his first head coaching position and held it for 12 years. While in the head coaching position, he compiled a 91-44-3 record.

He was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1999 as well.
