Benjamin “Dale” Gibson represented Mississippi State from 1969-1972. A staple in the sprints and middle distance races, Gibson ended his collegiate career as a multiple-time SEC and NCAA champion.
Gibson earned two SEC titles in the indoor 440yd in 1971 and outdoor 440yd in 1972. Gibson was the first indoor NCAA track and field champion for State, earning the 600yd title in 1972.
Gibson was a two-time All-American in the indoor 600yd, the first to do so while representing Mississippi State. Gibson earned a podium finish at every SEC Championship through graduation, and held program records in the 440yd, 600yd and mile. He was voted the most outstanding track athlete at the Southern USTFF meet.
