Six Bulldogs Headed to Oregon After State’s Historic Day
May 25, 2018 | Track & Field
TAMPA, Fla. – Mississippi State's men's track and field team had a historic day on Friday at the NCAA East Prelims. For the first time since 2008, two Bulldogs will run the men's 800m in Oregon.
MSU also put three 400m hurdlers through to the semifinals, matching its total in that event since Steve Dudley took over as head coach in 2010. Six Bulldogs have already advanced to Eugene for the NCAA Championships in two weeks.
"It's great for our program," Dudley said. "Those kids ran their hearts out. I'm so proud of them for getting to Oregon. This is our goal every year. You want your season to end in Eugene."
Karson Kowalchuk was the first to punch his ticket to nationals. With a personal-best 10.21, he finished 11th in the 100m quarterfinals. He then closed the day by taking second in his heat of the 200m to automatically advance to tomorrow's quarterfinals with another personal-best 20.55w.
Ro'Derick Spears, the school record holder in the 110m hurdles, opened the day with a seventh-place finish to advance to tomorrow's quarterfinals.
Marco Arop broke his freshman 800m record again and moved into second in school history with a first-place 1:46.78. Dejon Devroe joined him on the way to Oregon with an eighth-place finish. The two are the first pair of MSU athletes to make the 800m semifinals since Golden Coachman and current assistant coach Chris Woods did so in 2008.
MSU dominated the 400m hurdles once again, pushing three runners through to Oregon. The Bulldogs almost picked up a fourth, which would've matched the program's total in that event since 1976, but Vince Castillo finished 13th, missing Eugene by 0.11 seconds.
Charles Brockman III, Malcum Tatum and Rasheed Tatham all ran personal bests. The trio finished seventh, ninth and tenth. Prior to this season, only two Bulldog men had made the 400m hurdles semifinals under Dudley. Scottie Hearn advanced in 2013 and 2015, while Nathan Arnett made it in 2012.
MSU's men's team is set up to make NCAA history for the second time this season as no men's program has ever put three men in the 400m hurdles finals in a single year. Three women's teams have accomplished the feat including Texas (2003), Florida (2004) and Miami (2010). The Bulldogs became the first program with three men to throw the javelin over 79.00m earlier this year.
Saturday begins with the women's hammer set for an 7:45 a.m. CT start. Bulldogs will compete in the women's triple jump, men's javelin and men's high jump. On the track, both the men's and women's 4x400m relays along with the men's 4x100m will look to advance to Eugene.
Kowalchuk and Spears join women's 1500m runner Rhianwedd Price-Weimer in quarterfinal action, and Stephen Jones will step onto the track for the 5000m to close the meet at 7:05 p.m.
