Allen, Mangum Collect All-SEC Honors
May 21, 2018 | Baseball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After a red-hot finish to the regular season, a pair of Mississippi State's own have received Southeastern Conference baseball honors, the league office announced Monday.
Tanner Allen has been named to the Freshman All-SEC Team at first base and junior outfielder Jake Mangum received First Team All-SEC and SEC All-Defensive Team honors.
A native of Theodore, Ala., Allen is the only Diamond Dawg freshman to have started all 55 games this season, with 30 of those starts having come at first base. After posting a 1.077 slugging percentage and a .571 on-base percentage last weekend vs. Florida, Allen was named SEC Freshman of the Week for the first time.
Allen is hitting .301 on the year with 14 doubles, a league-leading five triples, three home runs and 35 RBIs. Allen is the ninth Bulldog to receive All-SEC Freshman recognition and the first since Jake Mangum in 2016. Allen is also the first Freshman All-SEC infielder for State since Ryan Gridley in 2015.
By receiving a pair of SEC honors in 2018, Mangum now has seven over his three-year career. This marks the second time Mangum has been named First Team All-SEC (2016) and his third-career All-SEC honor (second team in 2017). Mangum ended the regular season leading the SEC in hits (82), along with ranking second in doubles (20) and fifth in batting average (.350).
The Pearl, Miss. native has also now been named to the SEC All-Defensive Team for the second-consecutive year after adding to his highlight reel with numerous spectacular catches in 2018. Mangum is the first Diamond Dawg since Tommy Raffo (1988-90) to receive All-SEC honors in three-straight seasons and is the first Diamond Dawg to be named to the SEC All-Defensive Team twice.
Next up for State is a date with LSU on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. CT in the SEC Tournament in Hoover, Ala. The game will be nationally-televised on SEC Network.
