No. 22 Softball Splits Saturday Doubleheader with No. 10 Texas A&M
April 07, 2018 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – After dropping game one of the series by a 3-1 final, No. 22 Mississippi State (29-10, 4-7 SEC) walked off a 10-inning 4-3 victory over No. 10 Texas A&M (33-9, 6-5 SEC) Saturday afternoon at Nusz Park.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the 10th, pinch hitter Taylor Kelly drew a walk to bring home the winning run to even the series. Senior Cassady Knudsen earned the decision in both games to improve to 11-4 on the season. Junior Emily Heimberger and senior Reggie Harrison led MSU at the plate over Saturday's doubleheader with three hits each. Harrison added two RBIs.
In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, the Aggies struck first with a two-out RBI single by Ashley Walters. The Aggies plated a second run in the top of the fourth with help of an MSU error that allowed the lead-off runner to stand at third base. A play at the plate was unsuccessful with a groundout to second to push A&M's lead to 2-0.
Harrison cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI groundout to second, but the Aggies answered in the fifth with an RBI Sarah Hudek double.
MSU tried to rally in the seventh loading the bases with two outs after a Heimberger double, junior Kat More single and a hit by pitch issues to freshman Mia Davidson, but junior Sarai Niu just missed the home run ball and flew out at the warning track in deep center to end the game.
Knudsen tossed the complete game, allowing three runs, two earned, off six hits and four walks, while striking out two.
It was the Bulldogs that answered first in game two of the series as MSU took advantage of an A&M error to plate three unearned runs in the third. Heimberger plated the first run with a sacrifice fly to center field with the final two Bulldogs runs of the inning scoring on a bases-loaded walk and hit by pitch.
Texas A&M scored two in the fourth with a Kayla Poynter RBI single and with a bases-loaded walk of its own. The Aggies would tie the game in the top of the fifth with a Kristen Cuyos RBI double.
Relief pitcher Poynter and Knudsen would trade four scoreless innings before MSU broke through in the 10th. With two walks and a Harrison single, the Bulldogs loaded the bases to bring pinch hitter Kelly to the plate. The junior would draw the third and final walk of the inning to score Moore and clinch a 4-3 victory to even the series.
Senior Holly Ward earned the start in game two and tossed 3.2 innings. Ward allowed two runs off five hits and four walks. She recorded three strikeouts. Knudsen tossed the final 5.1 innings and allowed just two hits and struck out three.
