March 31, 2018 | Softball
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – No. 18 Mississippi State (28-8, 3-5 SEC) could not manufacture a run as Arkansas (27-6, 4-4 SEC) picked up the series victory with a 6-0 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at Bogle Park.
Mississippi State recorded just three hits in the game with freshman Mia Davidson's sixth-inning double being MSU's lone extra-base hit of the contest.
Coming into the game in relief during the first inning, sophomore Candace Denis competed the game. Denis (4-2) tossed six innings, allowing six runs, four earned, off seven hits and three walks. The right-hander struck out three.
Freshman Emily Williams started the game for the Bulldogs, only tossing two pitches before MSU brought in Denis. Denis and Arkansas starter Autumn Storms dealt three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits each before the Razorbacks broke through in the fourth.
Arkansas led off the inning with a single to left field, but MSU responded with a fly out to right and an out at second on a fielder's choice to retire two. Another Arkansas single up the middle put to on for Tori Cooper, who slugged a home run to left field to put the Razorbacks up 3-0.
The Razorbacks strung together another two-out hit in the fifth. With two on via an infield single and walk, a Kayla Green RBI double brought home a run before a Mississippi State error allowed two unearned runs to score, extending the Arkansas lead to 6-0.
State best scoring chance came in the top of the sixth as Davidson slugged her 11th double of the season to extend her hit streak to nine game and junior Sarai Niu got on board with her 34th career hit by pitch, taking over third outright in MSU history. A fielder's choice and strikeout would retire the side and leave Mississippi State scoreless. The Bulldogs went down in order in the bottom of the seventh as the Razorbacks recorded the 6-0 win.
