Bulldogs Dominate In 14-0 Run-Rule Win Against Jackson State
April 05, 2017 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Behind the highest run total of the season, the Mississippi State Bulldogs (27-12) put on a show against in-state foe Jackson State (9-29), cruising to a 14-0 run-rule victory Wednesday night at Nusz Park.
The Dogs tallied all 14 runs over the first three frames, including six runs in the first and third innings. The 14 runs are the most State has scored all season and the highest total since tallying 16 against Arkansas on April 6, 2015.
Wednesday night's five-inning win also marked MSU head coach Vann Stuedeman's continued domination in the state of Mississippi, as she improved her record against in-state foes to 29-5. She is now 5-0 against the Tigers in her six years at the helm of the Maroon and White.
Senior Amanda Ivy got things going for the Dogs in the opening frame, singling up the middle to score Bevia Robinson. Several batters later, Sarai Niu earned one of her two hits, scoring Ivy with a single through the left side to make it 2-0.
A pair of Jackson State errors would help the final four runs of the first inning come home, pushing the Maroon and White's lead to 6-0 after one.
The second inning would see two more runs score for the Dogs. After loading the bases with no outs, a wild pitch brought home Reggie Harrison to make it 3-0. Olivia Golden would reach on a fielder's choice on the next at-bat, bringing Caroline Seitz home to give MSU the 8-0 advantage heading into the third.
Another JSU error would help MSU bring home their ninth run of the game, as Maddie Dorsett singled to left and a Tiger throwing error scored Robinson. Madison Cousineau singled with two outs to bring the Dogs' lead to 10-0 and a bases-loaded walked pushed the lead to 11-0.
On the very next play, the JSU miscues continued, as a passed ball scored Olivia Golden, making it 12-0 for the Dogs. Morgan Bell and Katie Anne Bailey would follow with back-to-back RBI singles, making it 14-0 for MSU.
Alexis Silkwood and Cassady Knudsen teamed up to tally MSU's eighth shutout of the season. Silkwood threw 3.0 innings of works, tallying five strikeouts and allowing only three hits to win her 11th game of the season. Knudsen went 2.0 innings, striking out four and allowing only one hit.
Offensively, nine Bulldogs earned a hit, with Niu leading the way with her fifth multi-hit game of the season. MSU has now tallied at least 10 hits in 10 games this season.
With the midweek in the rearview mirror, the Dogs will remain at home to welcome South Carolina to Starkville for Super Bulldog Weekend. First game is set for Friday, April 7, with first pitch at 6 p.m. CT on SEC Network +. For a full list of this weekend's promotions at Nusz Park, please see the list at the bottom of the release.
Dogs Pile On The Runs Against JSU…
State tallied 14 runs on 10 hits Wednesday night, marking the highest run total of the season. The 14 are the most since April 6, 2015 against Arkansas, when MSU won 16-4 against the Razorbacks to close out the sweep.
The 14 runs are also the most the Dogs have tallied against Jackson State in school history.
Stuedeman Continues Her Mississippi Domination…
Vann Stuedeman has been known for her in-state success in her six years at the helm of the Bulldogs. With the 14-0 win tonight, Stuedeman is now 29-5 against opponents from Mississippi and 5-0 against Jackson State.
Bulldogs Love The Midweek…
The Bulldogs have seen success in almost all their midweeks this season, as MSU is 7-1 after the win against the Tigers. The win is the third run-rule midweek victory and the biggest win of the year in a midweek contest. It is the second time State has shutout an opponent while scoring at least 10 runs, as MSU took down Alabama State in five to the tune of 10-0 on March 2.
Four Runs Continues To Be The Key…
When MSU has tallied at least four runs, it has assured victory for the Maroon and White. With the 14-0 win against JSU, State is now 20-0 this season when putting at least four runs on the board.
State Pitches Another Shutout…
One of the major keys to MSU's success this season has been the play of its pitching staff. That was no different on Wednesday, as the Dogs tossed their eighth shutout of the season and improved its staff ERA, which was 13th in the nation entering the night, by three points to 1.49. State is now 22-3 when keeping its foes below the two-run mark.
Non-Conference, No Problem For State…
As has been the case for the Dogs for the majority of the season, MSU found victory in non-conference play. With the win, State is now 25-5 in non-conference matchups.
