STARKVILLE, Miss. – After another stellar weekend on the tennis court, Mississippi State sophomore Nuno Borges has been named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Borges becomes the first Bulldog since Mate Cutura in 2015 to win multiple SEC Player of the Week honors in one season.
"It's an honor to be named the SEC Player of the Week again," Nuno Borges said. "Without the support of my teammates and coaches, these kind of awards wouldn't be possible. We work hard together, compete together and win together. This is a great motivator to finish the regular season off strong this weekend and continue to get better."
The sophomore won his first SEC weekly honor of the season on March 1 after leading MSU in back-to-back ranked wins over No. 22 Tulane and No. 38 NC State.
This past weekend the Maia. Portugal, native earned a combined four wins in singles and doubles play to push MSU past No. 7 Texas A&M and LSU. Borges played a huge role in the upset of the seventh-ranked Aggies as the sophomore clinched the 4-3 win.
"I'm happy that Nuno has been recognized for his outstanding play once again," head coach Matt Roberts said. "He has led us on and off the court with his desire to improve and handle day-to-day obstacles. Nuno deserves all the accolades he gets and we are very proud of him."
Borges improved his singles record to 27-5 over the weekend, after earning his 16th and 17th ranked victories of the season. The Bulldog defeated No. 8 Arthur Rinderknech of TAMU and No. 48 Jordan Daigle of LSU in straight sets.
Borges also shined in doubles play for the Bulldogs, as the sophomore partnered with Strahinja Rakic to defeat two teams by a 12-3 margin over the weekend. The doubles victories for Borges and Rakic moved their record as a pair to 11-8 on the season, which ranks second best on the team.
In his first season with the Bulldogs, Borges earned one SEC Freshman of the Week honor while also taking home three end-of-the-year distinctions after being named to the All-SEC Second Team, SEC All-Freshman Team and SEC All-Tournament Team last season.
For his career, the sophomore Bulldog has earned a total of 47 career singles wins and 22 career ranked singles wins. Borges is also 34-6 in dual-match singles play and 18-2 for his career against ITA Southern Region opponents.
"Nuno is an all-around great person and reflects what we want in our student-athletes," Roberts said. "He leads by example on and off the court and gives tremendous effort in everything he does. That is evident in his hard work on the court, in the classroom and in the community."
Borges won the Newsom Award (given to the top student for each team on campus) last weekend. The sophomore is also a contender for MSU's representative on the SEC Community Service Team after his volunteer efforts this past year.
