MSU Downs Troy, Closes Homestand With 15th-Straight Win
March 07, 2017 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Wins just keep coming for the Mississippi State Bulldogs (19-3), as MSU took down Troy (11-12), 2-1, on Tuesday night for their 15th-straight victory of the 2017 season.
Playing in the SEC Network's first nationally-televised softball contest of the 2017 season, the Bulldogs tallied a pair of runs in the opening frame and rode the arm of Holly Ward all the way to the win. The 15-straight victories tie for the second-longest winning streak in program history.
"Anytime you can string together some wins, it's a win in itself," MSU coach Vann Stuedeman said. "This has been a great stretch at home and now we're setting our sights on conference play this weekend in College Station."
The Dogs came out of the gates quick on Tuesday night, as Bevia Robinson and Kat Moore both earned walks and stole bases to set up a Reggie Harrison RBI single to left, putting State up 1-0. After another walk from the Trojan staff, Caroline Seitz drove Moore home to give State a 2-0 advantage.
From there, Ward tallied six of her season-high tying seven strikeouts to keep Troy at bay. The Trojans would get runners in scoring position a number of times, but the Bulldog defense held strong, keeping the visitors 2-for-13 in the category.
Troy would have its shot in the sixth, as a trio of singles and a walk helped drive in its first run of the night. Down 2-1 and with the bases loaded on one out, the Trojans seemed poised to strike again. However, Ward had other plans, drawing a pair of groundouts to get out of the inning.
The junior worked around a walk and an error in the top of the seventh to seal the MSU victory. On the night, Ward tossed 7.0 innings (third complete game of 2017), allowing just one run on six hits while fanning seven.
Offensively, Harrison led the way with her fifth multi-hit game of the year (2-for-3). Seitz and Golden also tallied hits on the night.
MSU will now travel to College Station, Texas, to face Texas A&M next weekend, March 10-12, to start the 2017 conference slate. Friday night's contest is set for 6 p.m. CT and will be featured on the SEC Network +. The final two games will be broadcast nationally on the SEC Network, with first pitches set for 2:30 p.m., on Saturday and 2 p.m., on Sunday.
