March 10, 2017 | Softball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – A three-run bomb from Olivia Golden and a standout performance from Regan Green paced the Mississippi State Bulldogs (20-3) to a 5-2 victory at No. 5 Texas A&M to open the 2017 SEC season on Friday night.
Golden launched her fourth home run of the year, a three-run shot off the scoreboard in left, to break the game open in the third inning. From there, birthday girl Regan Green would keep the Aggies at bay as the Bulldogs moved on to their 16th-straight victory, tying a program record.
The Bulldog offense was on fire from the get-go, tallying a season-best 14 hits on the night, with six players earning multi-hit performances. The 14 hits are the most since earning 15 against Ole Miss on March 21, 2015.
After two scoreless innings to start the game, the Bulldogs turned up the heat in the third. Bevia Robinson kept her hot streak rolling, tallying a single and a stolen base. Reggie Harrison walked to put two runners on and Golden delivered the punch. On a 1-2 pitch, Golden sent a bomb to left to put the Dogs up 3-0.
A&M would get a run back in the home half of the inning off a solo home run, but that would be it for the next three frames. Over that stretch the Dogs tacked on two more runs, thanks to RBI singles from Katie Anne Bailey and Golden.
TAMU threatened to make things interesting in the final frame, putting a pair of runners on and then scoring a run via an MSU fielding error. However, the Bulldogs' other birthday girl Alexis Silkwood got a strikeout swinging to close out the win.
Green tossed 6.0 innings of work, striking out two and only allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits. She moves to 4-0 on the year.
Robinson, Harrison, Golden, Caroline Seitz, Bailey and Calyn Adams each tallied a two-hit showing for the Bulldogs. A total of eight State batters put at least one hit up on the night.
The Bulldogs and Aggies return to the Aggie Softball Complex tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. CT for game two of the series. MSU will go for its program-record 17th-straight victory on national television, with Courtney Lyle and Cheri Kempf on the call on the SEC Network.
