MSU Softball Set To Host Alabama State, Bulldog Slamboree
March 01, 2017 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Riding an eight-game winning streak, the Mississippi State Bulldogs (12-3) return back home to kick off a seven-game home stand, starting with Alabama State (3-9) on Thursday, March 2 and the Bulldog Slamboree from March 3-5.
First pitch for Thursday's midweek showdown is set for 6 p.m. CT, from Nusz Park and will be featured on SEC Network +. The contest is the third meeting in history between the two programs and the first since 1997.
State will also welcome Samford (4-11), UMass (2-8) and Central Arkansas (4-10) to town for the 2017 Bulldog Slamboree, which begins Friday, March 3 and runs to Sunday, March 5. The Dogs will host Samford (3 p.m.) and UMass (5:30 p.m.) on Friday, before taking on Central Arkansas at 12:30 p.m., on Saturday.
Following that game, all four teams will be seeded according to record, with the one and four seed facing off at 3 p.m., and the two and three seed playing at 5:30 p.m. The winners will move on to a Sunday afternoon championship match (1:30 p.m.), while the remaining two teams will play a consolation showdown at 11 a.m.
The Bulldogs are coming off a dominating 9-1 victory against Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday night, collecting their first run-rule victory of 2017. MSU used a trio of home runs to spearhead the victory, receiving bombs from Morgan Bell (2nd of season), Olivia Golden (3rd of year) and Katie Anne Bailey (1st of year).
Also sparking MSU's impressive victory was the play of Bevia Robinson, who went 3-for-4 on the night with a pair of runs and an RBI. Robinson has been State's offensive leader so far in 2017, going 18-for-36 (.500) with a team-high nine runs. Her .500 clip is third-best in the SEC and ranks 36th nationally. She has also stolen a team-high 10 bases, standing second in the league and 27th in the NCAA.
The Bulldog pitching staff has been on fire so far through the 2017 campaign, sporting a 1.11 ERA that ranks fourth in the SEC and 11th in the nation. Regan Green is the clubhouse leader with a 0.68 ERA, while Alexis Silkwood is a perfect 7-0 on the year, two wins short of tying her best start to a season in her career (9-0, 2015).
After the Slamboree closes out, the Bulldogs will cap their home stand against the Troy Trojans on Tuesday, March 7. The 6:30 p.m. CT contest will be the first nationally-televised game of the year for State, with Mark Neely and Jenny Dalton-Hill having the call on SEC Network.
