STARKVILLE, Miss. – Non-conference play is in the rearview mirror for the Mississippi State volleyball Bulldogs, as they get set to hit the road to open up the 2016 Southeastern Conference slate. As State gets ready to head to Tennessee and Kentucky, it's time to take a look back at last weekend and the 2016 season as a whole with this week's Bulldog Volleyball Notebook.
Weekend Recap…
State went 3-1 on the weekend, finishing second in its final non-conference tournament of the season. MSU took down FIU in a five-set thriller before dispatching Troy and Eastern Illinois, both in three sets. The Bulldogs dropped a five-set decision to Portland to close out the weekend.

The Bulldogs hit the road to kick off the 2016 SEC slate, traveling to Tennessee and Kentucky for the weekend. It will be State's first trip to Knoxville since 2013, when the Bulldogs picked up a 3-1 victory against the Vols. MSU will make the trip to Kentucky for the second-straight season, having dropped a 3-0 contest last year in Lexington.

Blocking Becoming State's Calling Card…
MSU has excelled in a number of statistical categories this season, but none have been better than the Bulldogs' blocking game. State has tallied six double-digit block performances this season so far and have earned 125.5 total through the first four weekends of play. To compare, MSU had 93.0 total blocks through the first four weekends of 2015.
The Dogs Killed It At The Maroon Classic…
Against the Florida International Panthers, the Bulldogs earned one of its best offensive showings in recent history. MSU tallied 71 total kills for the match, setting a season high. The 71 kills are the most since MSU earned 74 against UAB in 2013.
Fueling that offensive firepower were the team's 67 assists, which set a season high.
Singleton, Vujcin Earn Maroon Classic All-Tournament Honors…
Four non-conference tournaments down and four more all-tournament team accolades on her resume. Singleton led the Bulldogs with 64 kills and 73.0 total points throughout the Maroon Classic to pull in yet another honor. She has now earned all-tournament honors in all eight non-conference tourneys since her arrival in Starkville in 2015.
For Vujcin, her 45 kills and 12 blocks secured her first all-tournament team honor of the year. Vujcin recorded a season-high 17 kills to open the tournament against FIU and closed out the weekend with a season-high 7 blocks against Portland.
Singleton Joins The 1,000-Kill Club…
It's no secret that senior Evie Grace Singleton is one of the top offensive weapons in collegiate volleyball. On Friday against FIU, she added another honor to her career, joining the 1,000-Career Kills Club. The Little Rock, Ark., native entered Friday 20 kills short of reaching the milestone and eclipsed the mark with 25 against the Panthers. She is the only current Bulldog who has recorded such feat.
Spell Shines At Libero…
Last Saturday's first match was only Cheyenne Spell's second start of the season as the Bulldogs' libero, but that didn't keep her from showing out. Spell set a career high with 24 digs against EIU and turned in a similarly as solid showing with 22 against Portland.
Spell also set a career high with 3 aces against the Pilots.
Harris Closing In On Digs Record…
Junior Payton Harris now stands at 1,369 digs for her career and continues to make strides up the MSU record book. She currently holds fifth place on the school's career digs list and is just 2 digs away from tying Shauna Owens (1988-91) for fourth place. Melissa Kariker (1993-96) holds the school record with 1,707.
Dogs Set To Open Home SEC Slate Against Auburn…
After opening conference play on the road this weekend, the Bulldogs will set their sights on The Griss for their next set of conference contests. MSU will play host to Auburn (Friday, Sept. 30) and Alabama (Sunday, Oct. 2) to open up home SEC play. The Bulldogs and Tigers will face off at 7 p.m. CT on SEC Network +. MSU and Alabama will face off on national television, as the Highway 82 showdown will be broadcasted on the SEC Network at 3 p.m.
