STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State women's basketball will head to Ames, Iowa, this season to face Iowa State in the 2016 SEC/Big 12 Challenge, the league offices announced Monday.
The Bulldogs and Cyclones meet Saturday, Dec. 3, at Hilton Coliseum.
Tip time will be announced at a later date.
Vic Schaefer's fifth Mississippi State edition returns nine letterwinners and all five starters from last year's squad that won a school-record 28 games and made the program's second NCAA Sweet 16 appearance.
The Bulldogs are also coming off a school-best second-place SEC finish, as well as the program's second appearance in the SEC Tournament championship game.
State returns its top seven scorers, including First Team All-SEC and WBCA All-America Honorable Mention selection Victoria Vivians. The Carthage, Mississippi, native averaged 17.1 points and 5.8 rebounds during a standout sophomore campaign.
MSU also brings back junior Morgan William (9.7 ppg and 5.0 apg), and SEC All-Defensive Team selection Dominique Dillingham (7.9 ppg).
Mississippi State faces an Iowa State squad that has its top three scorers back from last year's 13-17 edition, including leading scorer and rebounder Seanna Johnson (17.0 ppg, 9.4 rpg).
The two squads are meeting for only the second time, with ISU claiming the lone meeting 87-74 in Ames on Nov. 23, 2001.
This season marks the first time the SEC/Big 12 Challenge will feature 10 games. The format consists of five home games on campus sites for each conference.
"The Southeastern Conference looks forward to the expansion of an enhanced competitive event with our Big 12 friends," said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. "The SEC/Big 12 Challenge in women's basketball will showcase the strength and depth of our women's basketball teams and provide fans from both conferences with exciting games."
"We look forward to all 10 of our women's basketball teams competing in the 2016 SEC/Big 12 Challenge," said Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby. "These marquee non-conference matchups should provide four-consecutive days of quality competition and excitement for fans across the country."
The challenge begins Dec. 1 and wraps up Dec. 4.
