Jake Mangum Earns Freshman All-America Status by Perfect Game
June 28, 2016 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Already building a legacy at Mississippi State, freshman stud Jake Mangum continues to pile on the accolades after being named to Perfect Game's First Team Freshman All-America list.
Â
The award is the second such honor in as many days after garnering the title from Baseball America Monday. In total, Mangum has been named to seven different All-America teams by five different publications. (First Team NCBWA Freshman, Second Team NCBWA, Third Team Baseball America, Louisville Slugger Freshman Team, Third Team ABCA/Rawlings, and First Team Baseball America Freshman)
Â
The First Team All-SEC selection led the conference with a .408 batting average and became the Maroon and White's first SEC Freshman of the Year in May. Mangum was the only player in the SEC to finish the 2016 campaign with a batting average higher than .400, and finished 22 points higher than his closest competition (Boomer White, Texas A&M, .386).
Â
Mangum's batting average is currently seventh in the NCAA and is the highest among the nation's freshmen. He also stands top-10 in the SEC in on-base percentage (.458, 5th) and hits (84, 7th).
Â
Mangum is currently playing summer ball for the Bourne Braves of the prestigious Cape Cod League, where he is hitting .353 after just eight games.
